Snake Plains (February 2016)

The Snake Plains track is a bit of an oddity, in that you wouldn’t tend to think of Mt. Wellington/kunanyi as playing host to an enormous plateau. The walk itself is mostly easygoing with a few brief moments of steep scrambling on the way up from the Fern Tree carpark.

The Snake Plains track itself is mostly downhill through a muddy path, and combining the amount of mud, as well as a few actual snake sightings, it’s certainly a track I wish I’d had a pair of gaiters for.

Once you’re on the plains, you’re treated to the eeriness of being in such a vast open space, yet feeling completely isolated. You’ll also be treated to views of Cathedral Rock looming in the distance (as pictured below with a terribly-zoomed in photo), lending an oddly pre-historic feeling to the proceedings.
